Silicosis is one of the oldest occupational diseases, and it still kills thousands of people every year. It is an incurable lung disease caused by inhalation of dust containing free crystalline Silica. As the condition worsens, it becomes more difficult for an affected person to breath. Even though someone can be exposed to Silica without even knowing it, there are symptoms to watch for: shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain, severe or dry cough and flu symptoms. Currently, there is no cure for Silicosis.

• Remote exposures are common
• Particles can remain airborne for hours and cannot be seen by the naked eye
• Particles can float long distances before causing harm
• 1.7 million American workers have been exposed

General Facts about Silicosis

• Many industries and trades can result in exposure
• The disease is frequently misdiagnosed
• The disease is 100% preventable if proper safety precautions are taken
• There is no cure for Silicosis
• Silicosis is progressive even after exposure ceases

An individual with Silicosis is at a higher risk for contracting Tuberculosis, heart disease, lung cancer, connective tissue disease, chronic bronchitis, and Silicoproteinosis (a fatal lung disease which decreases the ability of the lungs to produce oxygen).

Silicosis can be detected by a simple chest x-ray, but it is often the case that by the time Silicosis is diagnosed, it is too late for the victim to fully recover. Over one million American workers are exposed to Silica-producing dust and more than 50,000 people will develop Silicosis. Often, Silicosis may not be detected until as many as 10-35 years after the initial exposure.

There are three types of Silicosis:

Acute Silicosis: Occurs after heavy exposure to high concentrations of Silica. The symptoms can develop within a few weeks or as long as 5 years after the exposure.

Chronic Silicosis: Occurs after long term exposure of low concentrations of Silica dust. This is most common form of the disease, and is often undetected for many years. A chest X-Ray often will not reveal the disease for as long as 20 years after exposure.

Accelerated Silicosis: Occurs after exposure to high concentrations of Silica. The disease develops within 5 to 10 years after exposure.

The workers that are most at risk for exposure to Silica are:

• Individuals who chip, saw, hammer, drill, grind, crush, load, transport or work with concrete or rock substances
• Workers who sandblast buildings
• Employees of the shipbuilding industry
• Miners
• Railroad workers
• Glass manufacturing employees
• Welders

Additionally, if you have worked with any of the following materials, you may be at increased risk of developing Silicosis:

• Blasting abrasives
• Foundry Operations
• Brick
• Concrete
• Cement mortar
• Granite
• Sandstone
• Slate
• Mineral deposits
• Rock and stone
• Sand
• Topsoil

OSHA states that Silicosis can be prevented if employees are given access to properly working protective equipment, but unfortunately many employers consider their “bottom line” before the safety of their employees. Occupational safety measures include:

• Controls to minimize workplace exposure to Silica dust
• Respirators, gas masks and other equipment designed to prevent Silica from entering the lungs
• Substitution of substances that are less hazardous than Silica
• Clear identification of dangerous areas in the workplace
• Informing and educated workers about the dangers of Silica dust
